To win an award as prestigious as the CID Award for Interior Designer of the Year meant everything to me. The moment when my name was announced was by far the most surreal moment of my life. I had to literally pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. It was extremely humbling to be amongst the region’s best, and winning was not only a tribute to the hard work and endless hours that go in behind the scenes but also a motivating driver.
The positive publicity which followed thereafter really benchmarked me as a designer in the region. The following month, Commercial Interior Design magazine published an issue about the awards night featuring me on its cover for this achievement. I never thought I would be a cover girl but there I was on coffee tables in designers’ and developers’ offices all over Dubai. Suddenly people knew who I was, and the recognition I got was truly humbling. This was a compelling indication that I belonged at the highest level.
An award of such high-calibre and stature definitely adds value to an individual’s profile as well as a company’s profile and brand image. I remember wanting to work for an award-winning firm such as dwp to ensure I was part of the top-tier of design firms in the region. dwp has won a fair few prestigious awards in the past, so it was a proud moment to be able to add this award to the rest of the firm’s outstanding talent. I was also particularly proud to be representing American University of Dubai (AUD). Graduating from a university in Dubai and going on to win such an award demonstrates the quality of its education.
When deciding to enter your nominations in any award category, my advice is to truly understand what the award is for and what it represents. Establishing clarity is key.
Awards, in general, demonstrate excellence and expertise in the field, which is why dwp enters into such competitions. Clients and developers want to work with the best award-winning firms and designers, who continually experiment, explore and create unique and exciting ideas and set new benchmarks. It adds value to any project to be able to market itself as designed by award winners.
