Financial crisis was good for Dubai’s identity says GAJ

The worldwide financial crisis will have a positive effect on Dubai’s identity according to Graeme Fisher, partner at UAE-based architecture firm Godwin Austen Johnson (GAJ).

Speaking at the recent roundtable discussion run by Middle East Architect, Fisher said: “I think [the crisis] was a good thing in some ways. Dubai, if it hadn’t been careful, could have looked like any western city. Now there’s definitely a desire for identity and for authenticity.

“I think that, through design, we can help it to achieve its own identity. I think that’s what we will start to see as new work starts to come through. I hope it will be more considered and more appropriate.”

GAJ’s recent design portfolio includes academies at Dubai Sports City (pictured).
