Proposals to safeguard low lying areas of Lower Manhattan, New York City in the event of a flood have been put forward by architects.
They include creating lands which can be allowed to flood in front of buildings as well as ensuring the
structures are raised much higher off the ground.
The architects created a virtual model of how the city’s flood defences could be vastly improved.
The survey was carried out in the wake of findings about the effects of recent storms which have hit the USA, including Hurricane Sandy which devastated a large part of the east coast, especially the state of New Jersey.
All those involved in the survey emphasised work on flood prevention of the vulnerable area around
Battery Park and the Financial District needs to be undertaken as a matter of urgency.
