World Interiors Day celebrates green design by students in UAE

World Interiors Day (WID) in the UAE was celebrated by Jacob Sardini, an Italian furniture provider and interior design studio, and the Association of Professional Interior Designers (APID) by hosting a Student Project Day.

Interior design projects were presented from the American University of Dubai (AUD), American University of Sharjah (AUS), Ajman University, Manipal University and Al Hosn University of Abu Dhabi.

“We believe this is how the interior design community should work. Education is not about being a business; we are here to support young talent and want to expose them to the public,” said Evelin Novikova, executive assistant, Jacob Sardini.

Each university selected the best work from their students, displayed in the Jacob Sardini showroom on Saturday, May 28, 2011.

The students whose design concepts were displayed at the showroom were present to talk about their projects.

“I was inspired by Phillipe Starck; his furniture, the colours he uses and more. I like his style of working on a lot of unusual stuff,” said Noha Mohamed Ibrahim, Al Hosn University, Abu Dhabi.

Her classmate Khulood Al Marzooqi, said she thought no one could live without interior design as it affects all aspects of life, which was important to her. “I want to be like Frank Gehry or  Zaha Hadid – that’s my dream,” said Marzooqi.

Another student, Anal Constantine, displayed her chocolate store concept in the shape of a sweet wrapper and said she wanted to eventually work in designing hotels, residential and retail spaces. “Interior design is like sculpturing the place and putting life in it,” she said.

Jacob Sardini plans to continue supporting interior design students. Later this year, they plan to hold a student competition where the winner’s design will be produced, and either auctioned as a one-off exclusive piece or manufactured for commercial purposes and sold in the Sardini showroom.

WID is an annual global event, headed by the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI). It falls on the last weekend of May each year, and the 2011 theme was green interiors.
