UPC describes “national pride” in Desert Learning Centre

The Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre was described by the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC) as a source of “national pride” due to its sustainable achievements.

Situated in the Al Ain Wildlife Park, the project is the first building to achieve the maximum five pearls for the design phase in the Estidama Pearl Rating System.

The structure is now finished and the building is due for completion in August 2012.

During an exclusive tour of the building for Middle East Architect, Humaid Al-Hammadi, associate planner for UPC, said: “The centre is one of the pilot projects for Estidama and it’s one of the most sustainable projects in the whole country.”

He continued: “The Estidama team is very proud of the building and we always refer to it in our presentations. Many people are waiting for this project to be finished. It’s the subject of national pride and it’s a crucial part of the 2030 plan to make Abu Dhabi a sustainable city.”

The centre is a tribute to the late Sheikh Zayed and his contributions to the natural and cultural life of the UAE. It features several energy and water saving measures, including roof-mounted photovoltaic panels.
