UNStudio unveils first project in the UK

Amsterdam-based UNStudio has unveiled a 30-storey residential tower on London’s City Road, the firm’s first ever UK project.

The tower is called Canaletto, featuring a curving façade of metal and glass that breaks it into a series of three to five storey clusters. Each cluster is created as an individual “neighbourhood in the sky,” containing balcony terraces that boast views of the City of London and the basin waterways.

Founder of UNStudio, Ben van Berkel told design and architecture blog, Dezeen:  “I often find it difficult that if you look at the history of residential towers, they’re so neutral and monolithic in their appearance, but that when you walk away from [this] tower you can point to your own apartment and you can say ‘well, I’m living in the third cluster.’ You can play with that identity.”

He also compared the expression of the façade to that of furniture design detailing: “The elegance is found in a texturing of the façade, giving it more of an unusual scaling. Maybe it’s related to my fascination for furniture design and the idea of how one can extend an interior to its façade.”

Canaletto will provide 190 apartments as well as a health club, swimming pool, a private cinema, restaurant and a member’s club for the residents.

The project is set for completion by 2015 with the first apartments going on sale.
