BBC Culture has published its list of best buildings of 2017, which included the Musée Yves Saint Laurent in Marrakech by Studio Ko and the Louvre Abu Dhabi by Ateliers Jean Nouvel.
The regional projects mark two of the list’s eight spots, which highlight the year’s various cultural developments like Hastings Pier in East Sussex by dRMM and the Juergen Teller Studio in London by 6a architects.
Having opened its doors in autumn of 2017, the Musée Yves Saint Laurent is dedicated to the work of the legendary French fashion designer, and features cubic forms in terracotta, concrete and earthen-coloured terrazo while Moroccan stone fragments blend into the surroundings.
The Louvre Abu Dhabi also opened last fall and was met with both public praise and criticism. Designed by Atelier Jean Nouvel, the museum intended to reflect a ‘traditional Middle Eastern city’ through its passage-ways, courtyards and cubic forms.
designMENA recently reported on the list’s inclusion of Zaha Hadid Architects’ Napoli Afragola railway station in Naples. According to the feature, the station is a “powerful symbol of how, economically, southern Italy might yet perk up.”
