The Atkins-designed Prince Sultan Cultural Centre, a large-scale mixed-use masterplanning project in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has won the commercial and mixed-use category at the Cityscape Jeddah Awards.
The project, which is led by the Prince Sultan Cultural Centre Company, was officially inaugurated by Prince Khalid Al-Faisal, the Minister of Education and former Governor of Makkah Province, and Prince Mishaal bin Abdullah, the new Governor of Makkah Province.
The masterplan for the project has been designed to stimulate “social wellness”, encouraging ownership and involvement from the whole community to promote physical and mental wellbeing.
Receiving the Cityscape Jeddah award, Dr. Ahmed Al-Sanousi, CEO of Prince Sultan Cultural Center Company, described the project as visionary. “The concept and approach to this development is unique and certainly deserves such a prestigious award,” he said.
Located in Obhur, north of Jeddah City, Prince Sultan Cultural Centre will provide housing for 15,000 people, while its centre-piece is a stunning cultural centre which celebrates Arabia past, present and future.
Construction of the project is set to begin later this year.
Atkins’ masterplan incorporates all the components needed for a strong community: residential; culture; healthcare; education; retail; offices and commercial space; exhibition and hospitality; and an integrated public realm network.
From any location within the development people will be within less than a five minute walk from green open space.
Design director Janus Rostock said: “We’ve developed a suite of wellness criteria to assess the plan against our ‘wellness concept’ and every element within the masterplan has to meet these. What we end up with is a city within the city of Jeddah – a fully self-sustaining mixed-use development which supports a vibrant community and healthy, active lifestyles.
“This represents a step change in how mixed-use masterplans are designed in the Kingdom and beyond. Our client has a very clear and determined vision of what they want to achieve and the result will be an exemplar project for the whole region.”
The Cityscape Jeddah Awards were presented before an audience of investors, developers and real estate professionals to honour exceptional projects. They were part of the Cityscape Jeddah 2014 exhibition, which was held under the patronage of Prince Mishaal Bin Majed, Governor of Jeddah.
