Taj Mahal project ‘has soul’, says Dubai developer

The financial backer behind the controversial plans for a Taj Mahal replica in Dubai has claimed the megaproject will put “the soul” back into “plastic Dubai”, 7DAYS reported in an interview.

Despite anger emanating from his native India about the Taj Arabia construction – which will be four times the size of the original – at the Falconcity development, Arun Mehra, chairman of the Dubai-based Link Global Group, has refused to scrap it.

Refuting claims the $1bn project is just a copycat, Mehra said what they both share is a “monument to love”. He said: “Some say Dubai is very plastic. We want to remove that thought.”

Mehra insists work at the Taj Arabia hotel and residential complex, which will host wedding parties for up to 3,000 guests, is to begin in June and it will open “at the end of 2015”.

“We want to bring the soul here and I want to contribute and create a soul in Dubai.”
