Star Wars Dreamliner takes to the air

Travellers heading for a destination far, far away will soon be able to get there Star Wars style.

A design by Japanese airline All Nippon Airways (ANA) for the R2D2 Dreamliner marks the first time that a character from the film series will appear on the exterior of a commercial plane.

The robot’s motif is imprinted onto the Boeing 787-9 main fuselage, wrapping around its exterior skin — while the Star Wars signature logo spans the length behind the wings.

The design symbolises the beginning of a five-year partnership between ANA and Star Wars franchise owners Walt Disney.

ANA vice president Takashi Shiki said: “Although it’s a lofty goal, we hope that like Star Wars, ANA will become well known and loved across all borders and generations.”

The aircraft is expected to take passengers to international destinations beginning this autumn.
