Showcase for Alhambra plans

Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza is to showcase plans for a new entrance and visitor centre for the Alhambra Palace, Grenada, Spain at an exhibition.

The show will take place in Berlin later this month and is called “Visions of the Alhambra” It will illustrate the competition-winning plans created by Siza and Spanish architect Juan Domingo Santos for  the entrance to the 1,000-year-old Moorish fortress.

The new configuration is aimed at allowing in  up to 8,000 daily visitors without being them subjected to lengthy queues.

The architects plan to replace the existing two-stage queue system, creating a new partially submerged entrance gate that will lead visitors through areas of light and shade towards a courtyard, before arriving at a main plaza and auditorium.

Siza said: “Each project is a challenge but this one is mythical.”
