Shortlist for UK parliament building renovation project revealed

Four leading architecture firms have been shortlisted for the design work to renovate the Palace of Westminster, the home of the UK parliament.

They are Foster + Partners, Allies & Morrison, BDP and HOK.

Bidders for work on the Grade I-listed building — a UNESCO world heritage site that has not undergone any form of restoration programme since it was rebuilt after a fire in 1834 — all have experience of important projects in London.

Allies & Morrison, known for its master-planning of complex projects, was responsible for the restoration of London’s Royal Festival Hall and the Greenwich Observatory.

HOK was founded in St Louis but its UK arm was recently responsible for the Francis Crick Institute in King’s Cross, together with PLP Architects.

BDP, one of Britain’s biggest architecture practices recently worked on the Royal Albert Hall.

Foster + Partners whose work comprises everything from space ports to major infrastructure projects, has relevant experience with the restoration of the Reichstag, the symbol of unified Germany. The firm’s London experience includes the majestic Great Court of the British Museum.
