RIBA to host OMA Dubai event

Projects in the Middle East being undertaken by architect firm OMA will be the subject of a discussion to be held next month.

OMA partner Iyad Alsaka (pictured) will be speaking about the company and its designs in the region on Tuesday April 7 at the Impact Hub, Souk Al Bahar in Downtown Dubai. The event is being hosted by the Royal Institute of British Architects.

On a recent visit to the UAE the company’s founder, Rem Koolhaas, spoke about the city.

He said Dubai has moved away from “architectural caricatures” and is now a force in the world of building design.

The Dutchman, aged 70, addressed students at the American University of Sharjah.

“Dubai has escaped from its architectural caricatures,”  Koolhaas said. “There’s a great evidence of sophistication and an emergence of local architects that recognise authenticity.”

The architect said he had a positive outlook on the region as it provided the opportunity for the dawn of something new.  He also praised the involvement of the country’s rulers and the freedom they have given to designers to transform the landscape of the region.
