Renzo Piano unveils US skyscraper with rooftop greenery

Italian architect Renzo Piano has unveiled its high-rise glass tower named ”555 Howard” in San Francisco developed in collaboration with local design firm Mark Cavagnero Associates.

The project will be the first US tower from Piano outside of New York and features vegetation on its top level.

It takes the form of a clear glass tower featuring a hotel, along with residential space, meeting rooms, a ballroom, a gym, a restaurant and a public cafe on the ground floor, with an open rooftop terrace situated atop 36 floors.

In the flying terrace, a penthouse restaurant and lounge are shaded by trees and framed by a 20-foot-high glass wall.

A 12-metre-tall tower uses double layers of glass along the south and west side to lower heat inside the building, while solar panels could also be integrated.

The project was presented at the city’s Planning Commission last week and it is expected to be approved within a month.

Renzo Piano is also one of the finalists for the Qatar Art Mill regeneration project, a competition to transform a former flour mill in Doha into an art gallery.
