New stadium to open in Al Ain

A new 25,000-seater sports stadium in Al Ain – the first in the region to offer shading to every spectator – is set to be officially opened next month.

With its outer facade inspired by the trunk of the palm tree the new Hazza bin Zayed Stadium has been constructed in “a record time of 17 months” say its designers.

As well as being home to the local Abu Dhabi football team Al Ain the new stadium is intended to attract regional and international sports events.

It is the cornerstone of a mixed-use development project that is being completed in several phases on a plot of 500,000m2. The development includes residential, commercial and entertainment units as well as a luxury hotel and sports and social facilities.

All will be linked to a chain of restaurants, cafes and retail outlets giving shape to the new downtown of Al Ain City and mid-January is the projected date for its official opening.
Mohamed Mubarak Al Mazroui, chairman of Al Ain Club Investment Company, said: “Hazza bin Zayed Stadium is a new addition to the sports infrastructure in the country.

“The stadium will become a pioneering sports destination, forming a vital part of an integrated and a huge mixed use development with facilities serving the sports, social and tourism sectors of Al Ain City and the UAE in general.”

The stadium  includes a “First Class” stand with 3,000 seats, is the first of its kind to provide shade to all spectators through the use of a moving-ceiling umbrella that can cover the whole stadium when necessary – so also protecting players from extreme heat.

“This has been realised through unique engineering and technical advancements in accordance with latest world technologies to enhance the aerodynamic nature of the structure through the ceiling design that covers the stadium and the seating areas during the hot season, during the matches,” said a statement from its designers.
