London-based design practice Giles Miller Studio, under the guidance of Dubai’s Capsule Arts, has recently delivered a new installation in the Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates.
The three-dimensional wall installation, called the ‘Drift’, is an homage to the world’s first and largest indoor ski resort. It also references both the snowy and mountainous terrain as well as the undulating sand dunes of Dubai and neighbouring Emirates.
The installation consists of thousands of bronze-finish box elements of various depths, colours and levels of transparency which are hung cascading down the face of the reception feature wall.
Up close Drift appears to be an abstract design, but when viewed from further away an image inspired by the natural patterns left in sand and snow alike by gusts of wind forms. When fully lit, the installation serves as a centrepiece for the hotel’s lobby.
