South African president Jacob Zuma (pictured) has confirmed construction of the Nelson Mandela Legacy Bridge, which pays tribute to the country’s 94-year-old former president.

The bridge across the Mbashe River, which is 140m long and 12m wide,  is scheduled for completion by January 2013.

Connecting Ludondolo of the Eastern Cape to Mvezo, the bridge will result in a shortened distance to Qunu Village, the home place of Mandela himself, and turn it into touristic attraction in addition to boosting economic development.

President Zuma said that the bridge is “both a metaphor for, and a tribute to Mandela and his willingness to build bridges between people and between ideas, between young and old as well as between cultures.”

The project is also said to provide work for more than 300 people.
