Modernist hotel proposed for Chilean desert

LAN Architecture has revealed its design for a modernist hotel and residential complex in Chile, in the barren landscape of the Atacama desert.

Spread over three levels and dug partially into a hillside, the design appears to float above the contour lines and is orientated to the west, parallel to the slope.

The residence area is divided into two horizontal sections: an upper zone dedicated to the guests’ rooms and an upper zone with common areas.

The building will use a steel skeleton structure with columns, steel trusses, lightweight infill and composite steel floors. This allows for a high degree of prefabrication and a limitation of labour time on site.

The Atacama desert, which extends from the Peru-Chile border in South America, is known as the driest desert in the world.
