Matthew Engele wins Architect of the Year 2016

Nominated for his work as design director of global architecture while at dwp Matthew Engele is the winner of the 2016 Architect of the Year award.

He has now gone on to work at Woods Bagot, for a second time, but is still based in Dubai.

The judges praised Engele for his “across the board excellence with real innovation and true attention to details with a strong emphasis on sustainability.”

Engele said: “I’m astounded to win this award. I have been working in Dubai since 2008 and I feel that I have bought into the whole vision of its progressive design environment.

“What I focus on is improving the built environment and I always want to create to create something that makes life a little better for everyone. I know that this is a personal award but so many people have helped me in my work. They all share the same vision.”

Formerly this year’s winner was a leading design architect and team leader in Europe and the Middle East with internationally renownedarchitectural firms Zaha Hadid Architects and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA).

Engele’s portfolio includes cultural and community developments, urban design and renewal, high density residential, education, retail, hotels and large-scale mixed-used developments.

Among the key projects he has designed are Dubai Design District, Mulberry Park Heights, Marassi Al Bahrain and Fairmont Hotel in Al Khobar.

Engele has also been an invited critic and guest lecturer at universities in the UK, USA and UAE – most recently as a professor specialising in the subject “Micro-Tactics: Urban Transformations through Public Realm Interventions” at the American University of Sharjah.
