Kohn Pederson Fox (KPF) has unveiled images of the new Abu Dhabi International Airport which is currently under construction, showcasing an undulating roof design.

Earlier in March, it was announced that the opening of  Abu Dhabi Airports’ $2.94 billion Midfield Terminal has been pushed back by two years. The project, which was supposed to open in September 2017, was delayed due to the roof design.

However, in the images posted by the architects on its Instagram account, work on the roof appears well under construction.

The project was first unveiled in 2012, the centrepiece of Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC)’s multibillion-dollar investment programme which will provide a full terminal building, passenger and cargo facilities, and duty-free shops and restaurants for up to 50 million passengers a year.

The design features a curved roof that appears to float across 18 steel arches, with a 50 meter-high Departure Hall that is largely column-free through the use of long span leaning arches that gives the building its outdoor quality.

“In this context the building is the dominant and most impressive structure on the horizon with its dynamic profile silhouetted against the sky. At night the building’s illuminated interior will be visible from the highway over 1,500 meters away,” KPF said in a release.

Additionally, despite adjustments to its design, The KPF-designed Royal Atlantis Resort & Residences project is still on course to complete and open in 2019, according to Pierre Sironval, managing director of Six Construct.
