James Bassos, Dubai-based interior designer, dies aged 39

James Bassos, who ran a Dubai-based design studio Bassos Design until his sudden death last week (21 December 1976- 1 July 2016), has created some of the most inspiring interiors across the Middle East.

As a talented design director, Bassos had an extensive experience in hotel, multi-residential, commercial and bespoke private residence design, both locally and internationally.

He grew up and lived in Brisbane, Australia and graduated with distinction with a Bachelor of Built Environment Degree (Interior Design) from Queensland University of Technology (QUT). He was also a guest lecturer at QUT.

As lead designer of DBI Design, one of the largest design companies in Australia, where he worked from 2001 until 2012, Bassos delivered design schemes across Australia as well as in the Middle East region. Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi was among the major regional projects he worked on while at DBI.

Bassos first visited the UAE for work in 2007 and had been living here in Dubai full time since 2012 when he joined dwp as an interior design director.

During that period, Bassos has worked on numerous projects, including Medina, a mixed-use development in Saudi Arabia, Ritz Carlton F&B outlet refurbishment in Qatar, Marine Parade mixed-use development, Jumeirah phase 3 beach hotel refurbishment Dubai, Hilton Double Tree in Saudi Arabia.

He set up his design studio in 2014, delivering many innovative and unique design projects, including Noir Lounge and Olea all-day dining in recently refurbished Kempinski hotel Mall of the Emirates in Dubai.

With such a vast and in-depth knowledge of design industry, Bassos was a regular contributor to design industry in the region. Most recently, Bassos was among five designers who participated in the roundtable  that was organised last month by Commercial Interior Design and Middle East Architect magazines.

He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and work colleagues.
