Green clean plan for canal

Green clean plan for canal

A design and architectural company is set to start work on plans to give one of the United States’ most polluted bodies of water  a thorough cleaning.

Early next year, construction will begin on a pollution-preventing green landscape to run alongside Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal, in New York City.

The proposal, known as “Sponge Park”, was first proposed more than five years ago by Susannah Drake of dlandstudio. Now it has funding for a start-up.

The project will see the construction of an open space lining the polluted waterway.

It will be anchored by soil-filled concrete cells that will retain and filter stormwater and topped with plants capable of soaking up excess water as well as naturally absorbing or breaking down toxins, heavy metals, and contaminants from sewage overflow.
