gmp to design vast exhibition centre in China

German firm gmp architekten has won a competition to design an exhibition centre for Tianjin, China, which covers a huge 1.2 million m2.

The National Convention and Exhibition Centre will become one of the largest exhibition centres in the world, constructed in the west side of the city between the historic centre and a development zone on the coastline.

A linear grid of 32 equal-sized exhibition halls has been planned, constructed in two phases on opposite sides of the road.

The design concept includes two large entrance halls positioned at the centre of the grid with tree-like columns supporting the roof of both structures. Meanwhile, an elevated walkway will cut across the centre of each to direct visitors into the single-storey exhibition from above.

The functions of the exhibition centre are rounded off with an open-air exhibition space, a congress centre, hotels, offices and administration facilities.
