Football stadium project scores second awards win

The stadium which will host the final of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, designed by tangramGulf, was awarded the Highly Commended prize in the Sustainable Project of the Year Category at this year’s Construction Week Awards – just weeks after winning top prize at the Middle East Architect Awards.

Design director Sandra Woodall accepted the award for tangramGulf at the event in Dubai.

“Our practice’s core beliefs lie in the sustainability and vernacular architecture of the Gulf,” she said.

“We’ve been working in Qatar for approximately three years now, and it’s very, very important to us that the ideas from the past are brought forward to the present and ultimately, into the future.

“Historically, the people of the Gulf region haven’t fought against nature – they’ve lived with nature and were able to exist and grow and develop communities within their towns and cities. This was happening long before air conditioning was invented. What’s very important to us is to take all of the information, knowledge and insight that we’ve gained from the past, and to bring that forward into the future.

“We want to show how Qatar can deliver a sustainable World Cup and suggestions that it could take place in the winter months are very welcome. For one thing the cooler temperatures will mean we can move away from night matches, so no floodlights.

“Spectators will also be able to walk around more and experience the local culture

“It’s very important that here in the Gulf, we show the world what we are capable of, and the lessons that we have learnt. We must apply our knowledge to create a sustainable environment for future generations and showcase how this region can stage international events.”

Woodall said she is not a big football fan, but is still looking forward very much to the World Cup in Qatar.

“But I’m not as excited as my son.” She said. “He’s a massive fan of the game and loves Manchester United.”
