Dubai top for shops and hotels – but last for culture

Dubai has been named the top city in the world for hotels and shopping, according to a survey by website TripAdvisor.

The study of the world’s cities analysed more than 54,000 responses from recent reviews with Tokyo named best overall.

Dubai ranked first for shopping – ahead of New York City and Paris – and first for hotels, ahead of Cancun in Mexico and Bangkok.

However, Dubai ranked lowest for cultural experience with top destinations Rome, Vienna and Paris.

TripAdvisor described Dubai as “a cosmopolitan oasis, a futuristic cityscape that towers over the Arabian Desert.”

The TripAdvisor survey found Tokyo scored highest across the board, ranking in the top 10 in 13 of 16 categories.

New York City, the only US city evaluated, topped the list for best restaurants and nightlife and came second for best overall experience. Barcelona came third.

Other high ranking cities were Singapore, which was number one for comfort traveling alone, and second for taxi service, cleanliness of streets, ease of getting around and family-friendliness, alongside Rome, which topped the list of attractions and culture.
