His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai has officially pushed forward plans to turn Dubai Metro stations into museums displaying artworks that reflect various themes and cultures.

The aim of this initiative is make arts and creativity accessible to all parts of society and provide passengers a unique and entertaining experience. It also aims to establish Dubai as an strong supporter of the arts and the creative minds behind the works.

H.H Sheikh Mohammed expressed plans for the project’s completion to be completed within 12 months to synchronise with the launch of Art Dubai 2015.

“We want to reach everyone through arts. We want creativity to reach every individual in society. We want to inspire and communicate with every employee on his way back to work, every student on his way to pursuing education and every tourist visiting Dubai,” said H.H Sheikh Mohammed.

He added: “The UAE has been playing a vital role in supporting arts in the Arab region and in the world for years. The UAE provides a cultural bridge that links the east to the west. Art is a universal language that has the power to unite humanity and bring people from different languages, nationalities and cultures together. It removes barriers that seems to separate them from one another.

“We will continue to create motivational environments to support arts and culture and highlight the creative and artistic aspects of Dubai. Our purpose is to lead a creative renaissance for all the cultural and artistic aspects of life in Dubai.

The first phase of the project aims to transform four vital metro stations into art museums. Each one will have a specific theme that highlights a specific aspect of arts and culture. Both interiors and exteriors will be made to reflect these themes. The museums to be launched during Phase one are the Islamic and Arabic Calligraphy Museum, Inventions Museum, Contemporary Art Museum and Visual Art Museum.

The Islamic Art and Arabic Calligraphy Museum is set to feature a collection of artworks inspired by Islamic art and its development over 1400 years. It will include manuscripts, ceramics and jewelry as well as calligraphic paintings.

The Inventions Museum will in turn showcase the most important human inventions from different fields such as engineering, medicine, astronomy, mathematics, geography amongst others.

The Contemporary Art Museum will display a sense of contemporary expression featuring paintings, designs, graphic illustrations, models and other items.

Finally, the Visual Art Museum will showcase works from the contemporary visual art scene by previewing movies and documentaries and displaying multimedia content that is cultural and artistic.
