Dubai Metro extension for Expo 2020 announced

The Dubai Metro is to get seven new stations in order to serve the site of Expo 2020.

The tracks will be built inland from the existing Nakheel Harbour and Tower Station in an extension to the Red Line.

HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, has endorsed the project – called Route or Masar 2020 – and directed that construction work should start immediately.

The total length of the Dubai Metro will increase to 90km when the new 15km stretch is operational. A total of 11km of Route 2020 will be above ground and four below with five surface stations and two underground.

It will serve both the EXPO location and Al Maktoum International Airport.

“The RTA has mapped out an integrated plan for roads and transport projects to serve Expo highlighted by Masar 2020 project,” said Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and executive director of Roads and Transport Authority.

“The plan is meant to achieve sustainability of the project and accordingly the path is planned to link Expo site with a number of vital projects and locations in the area.”

In addition to providing an additional means of transportation to the Expo site visitors, the extended Red Line will also help reduce congestion on roads, RTA said.

The RTA said areas such as the Gardens, Discovery Gardens, Furjan, Jumeirah Golf Estate, and Dubai Investment Park will all benefit.  The journey from the Dubai Marina to the site of Expo will take around 16 minutes.
