Downton Abbey architect offers rural retreat for sale

Architect Giles Newby Vincent  – who designed one of the houses featured prominently in hit UK  TV drama Downton Abbey –  has put his eight-bedroom English rural retreat up for sale

Built in the 18th century, The Old Rectory is priced at $3.75m

Newby Vincent specialises in restoring historic buildings, primarily in France and Italy.

Built in 1713, the Queen Anne-style country house is in the village of Wickhambreaux, near Canterbury,  Kent and is opposite the village green, old mill and pub.

The architect says he will be sorry to leave the county and said the countryside home was ideally situated for his international business.

He explained: “I regularly go to Paris, the Dordogne and London.

“You can leave Ashford by train and be in Paris an hour and 40 minutes later, though of course you lose an hour in the time change.

“It is all terribly civilised.”
