The award for retail design of the year went to Dubai-based architecture and design firm Anarchitect for its recent refurbishment project Rossano Ferretti Hairspa in Dubai’s Jumeirah neighbourhood.
Judges described the project as “elegant, brave and above all else, different.” They also said that it was a “fantastic and achievement in its own creative right” and praised Anarchitect’s bold design language.
Sponsored by Finasi and presented by partner and general manager Ahmed Sultan, the award recognised Anarchitect’s ability to bring the brand’s vision to locate its salons in existing and historical spaces to life.
“The project was an interesting one for us,” said Anarchitect’s founder and director Jonathan Ashmore. “We were able to work on the architecture and the interiors, and we had the opportunity to really transform what was a redundant 1970s villa and bring it back to life. The great thing with Rossano and what he does with his salons around the world is capture the context, so we were able to really bring that essence of the residential villa out and make it a great experience for clients.”
“I was really happy with the project and very proud. I think it presents repurposed architecture as an opportunity and viable option for Dubai, particularly with the Jumeirah area, which has a really residential sense and it shouldn’t be infused with a new typology,” he added.
Highly commended in the category was Brian Leib’s graphics and pop-oriented design The Gym. The shortlisted projects include Dubai Audio by Schwitzke & Partner Dubai; Hautletic by Wanders Wagner Architects, and Mrs.B Beauty Lounge by Pallavi Dean Interiors.
