Designed by international architecture firm Chapman Taylor’s Madrid studio, the Mall of Qatar has officially opened its doors to the public on April 8, 2017 in Doha.
The 500,000m² retail project features 500 shops, including more than 100 food and beverage restaurants, a 19-screen theatre complex, 7,000 underground and surface car parking spaces and a five-star 200-bedroom hotel operated by Curio, a collection by Hilton.
At the heart of Mall of Qatar is the ‘Oasis’, a 5,000sqm landscaped entertainment arena featuring interactive fountains and waterfalls.
The Oasis is covered by a 30m-high, 6,000sqm glass dome supported by four large ‘green’ pillars. It also showcases ‘MoQ Live’, a free entertainment programme on a 360º revolving stage.
The green space is surrounded by a 2,600 seating capacity food court.
“The Oasis pushes the boundaries of ‘experience’ retail by bringing the concept of retailtainment to life. It sets a new standard for shopping malls in the Middle East”, said Chris Lanksbury, director at Chapman Taylor.
According to the architects website, a dedicated metro station has been integrated into the design, “which will also merge into the centre as part of Doha’s new transportation system. This will give Doha and the surrounding regions unrivalled access to the Mall of Qatar.”
The description also states: “One of the major distinguishing architectural features of the Mall of Qatar is a three-storey highly sophisticated urban-lifestyle market place running the full length of the centre spine. This area with a vaulted glass ceiling opens out into a breathtaking central amphitheatre”.
