Blue Camel’s Emirates Business Class Lounge design revealed

Interior design and fit-out of the Emirates Airlines Business Class Lounges at Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 is one of Blue Camel’s flagship projects.

With an area of 6,000m2 each, both lounges can accommodate up to 1,000 passengers and are inclusive of different style seating and dining areas as well as quiet zones.

The lounge at Terminal 3 is also home to a Voss bar, Costa Cofee café, a buffet-style dining areas, a Moët & Chandon bar and a five-star spa.

Amidst one of the busiest airports in the world, the project was finalised in six phases over a period of 18 months. To encourage better passenger flow, one of the first area the design team had to rethink was the entrance.

Nakad comments: “Not being able to control the flow during the rush hours caused them a lot of problems. That’s solved with five counters at the entrance and different partitions for the exit.”

Derawiche adds that the new space planning was based on creating intuitively easy-to-use ambience for all travelers while taking into consideration the passengers’ comfort, functionality and materials that are durable enough to withstand extensive foot traffic.

“The airport will not accept finishes if they are not long lasting and easy to maintain,” he says. “The design also needed to cater to people coming from all over the world. Each passenger uses the lounge in different way so you have to create an experience for everyone so that they feel welcomed and comfortable.”

The interior design is contemporary and elegant with subtle hints to local context and heritage, including Mashrabiya screens. The color palette of the furniture is warm and neutral, complimented by darker natural wood and porcelain tiles for flooring.

“The simple design is sometimes the most complicated design,” admits Derawiche.

Being able to manage and control the entire process from initial concept to completion and handover was crucial for the successes of this project, according to Nakad. Thorough planning at each stage of the project was the key in order to obtain required approvals and authorisations and meet all the safety requirements.

To ensure all deadlines and targets are met, Blue Camel worked closely with both Emirates Airlines design team and Dubai Airport management.

“They were given a chance to make it right and were open to our suggestions,” he says, concluding that the lounges at the Dubai Airport now serve as a model and benchmark for the Emirates Airlines lounges around the world.
