BIG designs timber-clad arts centre in US

Danish firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has unveiled its design for a 2,800m2 US art centre clad in timber.

In approaching the design for the Kimball Art Centre, Utah, BIG found inspiration in the urban development of Park City and the settlement’s mining heritage.

Timber was the primary construction material of the first miner settlers in Park City, and BIG’s design is described as a “highly-evolved log cabin at an unprecedented scale”.

They solved this by essentially giving each street a gallery. The building footprint sits in relation to the city’s main street and  grid. As it rises it turns to face visitors entering the city via Heber Avenue.
