BDP wins two lakeside projects in Chinese water city

UK-based BDP has won two new projects in the historic city of Suzhou, China, which is dubbed the ‘Venice of the East’.

The firm won competitions to secure work on the Suzhou Dushu Lake masterplan and the Suzhou Yinshan Lake Sports Centre.

The Suzhou Dushu Lake masterplan project involves a mixed use high density retail and residential development together with high rise office and ground level commercial uses.

Located on a gateway site it aims to strengthen transport links and access and provide an identity for an emerging residential district.

The development includes 3,000 residential units, 135,000m2 of office development,  two 220 room luxury hotels, along with multi level shopping and leisure centre including basement car parking on a 22 hectare site.

At the heart of the scheme is an ecological park that connects to the waterfront and is part of an interweaving of landscape, water and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Suzhou Yinshan Lake Sports Centre is located within a sport themed park and will be a landmark leisure facility on a site overlooking Lake Yinshan.

The 4,600m2 leisure complex is based around an indoor sports hall on a site that has already been extensively landscaped. A key driver of the design is to maximise the outlook from the building, and for the views of the lake to be fully exploited and enjoyed.

The projects  were secured via the practice’s growing Shanghai studio, and will be delivered by BDP’s team in China in conjunction with the practice’s network of UK and global studios.

Shanghai studio head Steve Gillham said: “BDP has a long history and excellent reputation within all the sectors that China is looking to develop; and projects like Liverpool One demonstrate how we can deliver large scale schemes sensitively and seamlessly.

“This is crucial in cities like Suzhou where a balance between respecting and preserving ancient assets, and the creation of new urban realm, needs to be carefully maintained.”
