Baku’s Eurovision stadium design revealed

The design for Crystal Hall, the venue for this year’s Eurovision Song Content in Baku, Azerbaijan, has been unveiled by German architecture firm gmp.

Contractor Alpine Bau Deutschland AG was given the tough task of constructing the 25,000 capacity stadium in eight months, in time for the much-loved but oft-ridiculed competition in May.

Crystal Hall functions as a multi-purpose indoor arena, which is intended to be a longer-term facility.

The building has been designed as a pure steel structure which consists of three independent parts: the membrane façade, the modular stadium itself and the interior roof.

Meanwhile a developer in Azerbaijan has unveiled plans to build the world’s tallest building, eclipsing Dubai’s 828m-tall Burj Khalifa by a full 27%.

Property company Avesta said its 185-storey 1,050m superscraper, tentatively named the Azerbaijan Tower, would form part of a chain of 41 artificial islands in the Caspian Sea, with construction scheduled to start in late 2013.
