First annual Danube Student Interior Design Awards

Danube building material company has partnered with APID (Association of Professional Interior Designers) to launch the first Student Interior Design Competition.

The awards, to coincide with World Interiors Day 2012, are open to all students in the GCC and there will be two categories for both individuals and teams of up to four people.

The first category is to design a reception lounge for a small private museum housing a collection of Middle Eastern contemporary art.

The second category is to design a display cabinet for a rotating exhibition of a museum’s small and fragile artefacts.

“It’s always been a long term goal of mine to sponsor a design award such as this,” said Rizwan Sajan, chairman, Danube.

“The idea was to get involved in a project that recognises young interior designers as they are the future of the economy going forward. Most people think Danube is a construction building material company but we are also a big interior product supply company covering wallpaper, carpeting, curtains and chandeliers. By sponsoring this event, we want to bring Danube into the limelight and recognise upcoming talent.”

APID member, Robert Reid, professor, American University of Sharjah (AUS), said 15 colleges have signed up to the competition so far. The deadline for registration is March 20 and completed entries must be uploaded onto by May 8.

“The Middle East is an emerging design hub and we want people to see APID as a platform for interior design students, the community and industry professionals, sharing ideas and talent across the globe,” said Farida Al Awadhi, president, APID.

“The competition is an invaluable opportunity for students to demonstrate their creativity to the industry at large. It will raise awareness of the significant role interior designers play in society, creating a space that can have an overall affect on people’s health, wellbeing and lifestyle.”

The winner will be announced at a Gala event in the last week of May to commemorate World Interiors Day 2012 on May 26.
