AL_A creates American red oak ‘Timber Wave’ at London Design Festival 2011

The American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) trade association, threw the spotlight on American red oak through Amanda Levete Architects (AL_A) design ‘Timber Wave’ during London Design Festival (LDF) last month (September 17-25).

The three dimensional latticework spiral, which was specially commissioned by AHEC for the ninth edition of the festival, was made completely from American red oak by Cowley Timberwork and engineered by Arup, and will remain on display at the V & A museum until October 15.

‘Timber Wave’ stands majestically at the Victoria & Albert (V & A) Museum, framing the full height of the historic museum entrance on Cromwell Road, standing self supported at 12m high and creating a ‘walk through’ experience for visitors to the Museum.

“Red oak is an abundant resource that thrives in the American forest, making up around 30% of all U.S. hardwood trees,” said David Venables, director Europe, AHEC.
