An upended sofa was part of Dutch furniture brand Moooi’s latest collection that was unveiled during the 2016 Milan design week.
Designed by the brand’s co-founder Marcel Wanders, the Charleston sofa was among the 22 new pieces unveiled under the newly launched collection, Rebellious Harmony, presented in 14 luxurious home settings.
In addition to the new collection, Moooi had also unveiled its growing portfolio for Moooi Carpets, a project that was launched last year. 2016 sees an extensive collection of designs as well as designers with a total of 22 new carpets signature added to the overall portfolio. These include vibrant colours, photo realistic images and three-dimensional prints.
The brand’s 2016 Milan presentation is also its first since co-founder Casper Vissers stepped down from the position last year, to be replaced by Robin Bevers, who previously worked as managing director of Marcel Wanders Studio.
DesignMENA caught up with Bevers a couple of months after his appointment, discussing his plans for Moooi and the significance of Milan design week for the brand.
“Marcel Wanders Studio has always had a close relationship with Moooi, I have witnessed the development of Moooi since day one, and I have always felt very connected with the brand. Moooi was founded by Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers, started as a collection of iconic pieces and then moved into a full lifestyle brand. I have so much respect for what they accomplished and for the potential they created. To now take responsibility for Moooi and to take Moooi to the next level, that was really a challenge that I wanted to take and this is one of the biggest milestones in my career,” said Bevers.
Commenting on the changes that occur with the change in management, Bevers said: “We say it is an evolution, not a revolution because Moooi is doing very well and the last thing I want to do is be disruptive.”
He continued: “I look at Moooi and I see a lot of good things and those are the things you want to keep. And then you see what is open to potential. And first and foremost, Moooi is a very sexy brand. Marcel and Casper really built this brand – it is even almost a lifestyle.
But if you see the way Moooi presents itself during Salone in Milan or in their brand stores or in environments where they really make a difference, you can almost feel it instead of just see it. And that to me is really where the potential is: building on the brand.”
Commenting on Milan design week being a pivotal platform for introducing novelties, Bevers explained: “Salone is our main platform and we want to keep it that way. We have a 1700m2 space – and if you have people there, you can really form a dialogue that is profound and connect not only rationally, but also emotionally and personally, and that for Moooi is very important.”
