For the sixth year in a row, Commercial Interior Design has chosen 100 inspiring designs for the annual Objects of Desire coffee-table book, selecting products that have caught our eye from the local and international design fairs and showrooms we visited.
This year’s launch party took place at thejamjar gallery within Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz, where guests mingled, networked and enjoyed the fresh vibe and music while browsing the new edition of Objects of Desire.
Guests were able to see and touch some of the objects featured in the book and supplied by our sponsors: Magis, Cities Design, Art & Lifestyle, Cosentino, Roca, Technogym, Vann Furniture & Interior Design and 17a Consultants.
Objects of Desire would not be possible if it was not for the generous support of our sponsors and we interviewed each of them to find out which of their most desirable objects were on show at this year’s event.
For the first time, renowned Italian furniture brand Magis in collaboration with Dubai-based Superstudio was sponsoring Objects of Desire. Celebrating its 40th anniversary, Magis is the brand that has given a novel twist to the domestic design.
“Magis is very excited to sponsor the 6th edition of Objects of Desire; always a wonderful selection of objects and a very inspirational collection,” says Alberto Perazza, co-managing director of Magis.
Superstudio has been associated with Objects of Desire. According to Mohsin Jawaheri, founder of Superstudio, it is “a great platform to promote products and brands among key people in the industry”.
He says: “2016 will be challenging for the design industry. However, in my opinion, this is a good thing as we will be seeing some great design works being executed and we have Dubai Design District as another platform for our industry to support us.”
Superstudio has recently secured two new brands for the UAE and GCC region: Zeitraum and Michael Anastassiades, which will be launched during the opening of its new studio in Dubai Design District. Jaswaheri adds: “Also, many new products are being launched with our existing brands, including Magis, E15, Classicon, Moooi, Tom Dixon, Anglepoise and Davide Groppi.”
Cosentino Group is a global Spanish-based company which produces and distributes innovative surfaces with high value for architecture and design. Cosentino has partnered with Commercial Interior Design to sponsor the Objects of Desire book.
Ali Maarrawi, general manager at Cosentino Middle East says that this event is “a unique platform for the Avant-garde and singular crème de la crème of the design community in the region, organised by the best there is in the industry, it is a natural environment for Cosentino as the world’s forefront innovator and mould-breaker.”
This year Cosentino has launched a polished finish for Dekton with many new colours.
“The XGloss finish of our cutting edge product Dekton is an unparalleled polished surface of sublime splendour with superior technical characteristics and durability,” says Maarrawi.
Roca, the leading global bathroom brand, is dedicated to design and, as a repeat sponsor, values its ongoing relationship with Objects of Desire from its beginnings. By sponsoring the event, Roca ensured that the bathroom industry was well-represented with the region’s latest technology.
Katrina Tasbaz, specification and design manager for Roca, explains that the company’s ongoing support of Objects of Desire simply comes down to the opportunity the relationship provides.
Tasbaz explains: “Objects of Desire is a great event which takes you away from the hustle and bustle of Dubai life, being able to meet old friends and new faces in a relaxed atmosphere.
“We have a lot of novelties for 2016, such as Inspira, one of the Roca’s largest collections, which we will be showcasing at Objects of Desire. We also have new brassware, Modo, which is a solid surface collection, new sustainable products and nine new series of tiles.”
Cities Design, Art & Lifestyle
Sharing a creative collection of design items, Cities Design, Art & Lifestyle is the GCC’s premiere design and art store.
Hazem Aljesr, owner and founding managing director, explains his reasons for sponsoring Objects of Desire: “One of the goals of Cities is to encourage design initiatives and share all facets of art and design with as many people as we can. Objects of Desire is a wonderful opportunity for people to learn more about the world of design and see what other creatives are showcasing while also allowing us to make connections with other people in the industry so we can all continue to collaborate and work together.”
This year, Cities has an array of new products to share with the Dubai design community.
“We introduced several pieces from the Animal Chair collection at a recent exhibit we hosted for the designer Máximo Riera,” says Aljesr. “We were also pleased to debut the Enxoval cabinet at Design Days Dubai, a limited edition piece created by Alma de Luce.”
Other new items include sculptures from French artist Richard Orlinski, a selection of POLaRT furniture, creations from SDA and the Flyte light by Simon Morris.
Established in 1983, Technogym has equipped 65,000 wellness centres and more than 100,000 homes around the world with fitness. It has been an official supplier of the last five Olympic Games and has international sports partnerships with the Ferrari F1 team, Luna Rossa, Alinghi sailing teams and AC Milan and Chelsea football clubs. For the first time, Technogym is sponsoring Objects of Desire.
By teaming up with some of the most prominent names in the design industry, such as Antonio Citterio, Technogym shows its appreciation for quality design.
One of its recent products, which is featured in the book, is Kinesis Personal, which offers 200 exercises in just 1m2 of design. As an interior design element, Kinesis Personal is in eloquent sync with the modern world of hip design and purpose, inspired by nature and science.
Citterio, along with his assistant Toan Nguyen, offers two versions of the design: Heritage, fitted with oak wooden bars; and Vision, covered with polished steel and perfect mounted panels which create a mirror finish.
Vann Furniture & Interior Design
For a second time, Vann-FID is sponsoring Objects of Desire and will display its latest artwork and lighting fixture. As a company that provides lighting and artwork to hospitality and retail sectors, Espino Soodbakhsh, managing director of Vann-FID, says that the Objects of Desire is a good opportunity for design industry professionals to network with like-minded people in an informal ambience while getting to see the latest products from high-end manufacturers.
“There are not many high-quality networking events that enable the interaction between manufacturers and designers and fortunately Objects of Desire has successfully filled the gap during the last couple of years,” explains Soodbakhsh.
Together with its lighting partner Northern Lights from the UK, Vann-FID has recently launched a wide range of table and floor lamps suitable for trendy projects.
She says: “We have also started our collaboration with Artasa, a one-stop shop for artwork, art installations and sculptures from France that serves the best and most innovative products that would add the wow factor to the interior of any project.”
