Laura Bielecki of Ellington Group selects top products from Milan Design Week 2017
Laura Bielecki, design blogger and senior manager interior design at Ellington in Dubai selects products from Milan Design Week 2017.
I can never get over the scale of Milan Design Week and it feels bigger by the year. It’s so easy to get lost down corridors and alleyways of the fairgrounds and streets of Milan, stumbling into beautifully curated spaces, handmade pieces, curated shows and inspiring thoughts from the international design community. The city is abuzz with design, fashion, parties and events. The networking achieved in six days is worthy of the year’s wait and everyone goes home happy. The show itself features more than 2,000 exhibitors across 200,000m2, a feat ambitious for any fit bit owner to tackle.
Euroluce was “illuminating”, featuring dramatic chandeliers, light installations, exterior lighting, energy efficient solutions and home automation. The standout exhibitor was certainly Flos, which went will an all-star team of designers for a series of new collections: Phillippe Stark, Formafantasma, Nendo, Michael Anastassiades and Konstantin Grcic. Preciosa came into its own with a dynamic and inspiring stand featured by a crystal cathedral ceiling and gently moving bird chandeliers.
Moooi as always made a standout performance with “A life extraordinary” on Via Savona. The space celebrates a dreamland of photography, fantastical furniture and playful lighting worthy of a movie screen. Photographer Levon Biss did a collection of close-ups of insects that became the backdrop of Moooi’s new collections.
I also had the pleasure of meeting Piet Boon and Karyn Mein, my personal favourite inspiring designers.
