Founded 120 years ago as a pottery factory, Laufen took its name from the Swiss town where it is based and has since developed into a global manufacturer of bathroom ceramics.

To mark the anniversary, the company held an event, organised by design workshop, Atelier Oi, called The Swiss Art of Expression, to celebrate the history and future of the brand.

The exhibition included a scenography of water and fire, the two natural elements used in ceramic production, combining light, sound and movement.

Design couple Ludovica +Roberto Palomba marked the start of the company’s 120th year of production by introducing products into the Palomba Collection by Laufen.

“Since the very beginning, Laufen has wrested new innovations from ceramic in terms of production techniques, surface finishing and the ceramic itself, said Palomba.

“The design of the bathroom has most certainly evolved over the past 120 years and continues to evolve at an astonishing rate today.

“The beauty of Laufen is that its production processes and attitude to design continually evolve at an even faster rate, and working with such a forward-thinking manufacturer enables us as designers to create bathroom sculptures rather than just another functional bathroom product.”

Ivan Zupanovic, head of international project sales and export, Laufen, said the bathroom has been the passion of the company for 120 years – and it is likely to stay that way for the next 120 years.

“Today, the designer pieces processed from ceramic and the corresponding bathroom fittings made by the company are “made in Switzerland” export favourites worldwide. These products make the bathroom beautiful, practical and comfortable. Behind this success story are typical Swiss virtues, as well as a wealth of valuable experience in ceramics,” he added.
