“Flooring is the business card of the building,” said Angela Schaschen, managing director, Deutsche Messe Dubai branch, organiser of Domotex Middle East.

The trends in flooring are moving towards sustainability. Neel Bradham, VP of sales & marketing, InterfaceFLOR EMEAI, said using renewable and natural materials in products was important. “The ability to recycle our products and keep it out of a landfill is top priority,” said Bradham.

Flooring firm Desso follows the cradle-to-cradle (C2C) concept and claims its products can last up to 400 years with all the taking back and reassembling.

Andrew Sibley, sales and marketing director – emerging markets, Desso, said the company knows exactly what the sources of its products are, which allows them to take it back to its headquarters and re-assemble them.

“C2C products are not harmful for the environment or for humans,” said Julian Richardson, cradle-to-cradle advisor, Desso.

The top trends in the flooring industry are sustainability and bright colours, said Schaschen. “Apart from eco-friendly items, apple green and orange colours are popular,” said Schaschen.

Bradham predicts the flooring trends of 2012 in the UAE will be that of a mixture of different influences. “The trends in 2012 will be a mixture of things from all over the world; something like the Rio carnival,” he said.

With the importance of this industry in mind, Commercial Interior Design speaks to flooring suppliers you should know.

Ditozzi Design
By Maria Kordova, project manager

Tell us about your company?
Ditozzi Design is a firm that has European sensibility, quality, perfectionism and an American approach to its work.

What sets you apart?
Ditozzi Design is the company which worships quality. We design and manufacture hand tufted and hand knotted rugs impressing people visually and sensually. We use only the finest New Zealand wool and the best delicate silk. We can combine these fibres and encrust the rug with Swarovski crystals or pearls to give it a truly luxurious touch. The density of the fibre, low pile, and special “polishing” technique allow us to design rugs with the most meticulous details and subtlest hues.

The rugs are one-of-a-kind. They are inspired by the world’s fine art and architecture and will also reflect the customer’s own taste and style. This is couture service and quality, with bespoke rugs for connoisseurs. We draw your dreams and wishes to make the rugs worth your private collection.

What are your best selling products?
Our best selling design is Lilly-of-the-valley. This design was inspired by the personality of the Russian Empress, Maria Fedorovna. Lily of the Valley was her favorite flower, and she also loved to see it as a motif for her precious things.

This rug was drawn from Maria’s fan which currently is a historic artifact being kept in the hermitage Museum, Saint-Petersburg. A 9’8” diameter, it is hand knotted and made with fine wool.

Any recent developments?
The firm has a new contemporary rug collection for those with boundless taste. Fresh and unexpected, the rugs are inspired by the beautiful sights of Saint-Petersburg and spiced up by the white night adventures. Based on the various pencil sketches, the rugs are handmade with fine 100% wool.
