The design studio Apical Reform has just unveiled its new interactive public installation, inspired by the popular social media hashtag #MyDubai, launched three years ago by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai.
Manifested in a vibrant red colour, a sand dune-inspired installation is located at Dubai Design District.
“Dubai is an exciting blend of tradition and modernity, of the man-made and nature. We wanted to translate that into a visual that is rooted in the local context but has global appeal” says Amrish Patel, founder of Apical Reform, the studio behind this new city icon.
As Patel explains, each alphabet is extruded into the third dimension using stringent parametric design formulae. Then, each layer is composed by hand to represent the ripples on the surface of a sand dune.
In January 2014 Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, launched the hashtag #MyDubai, inviting the Emirate’s residents and visitors to write the social media biography of the city.
Since then, across the various social media platforms, countless pictures and videos have been shared using the tag. Each post tells a different story of the Dubai experience and

The design of the installation blends the innovative attitude of Dubai with its natural landscape.
During the 2017 Design Days Dubai exhibition, Apical Reform created a Sonuslexica installation, which also paid homage to the rise of Dubai.
