Swiss president Ueli Maurer will lead a delegation to break ground on the country’s pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai.

Maurer is on a state visit to the UAE and expressed his delight at the country’s participation in Expo 2020 Dubai and reaffirmed his confidence in the strength of the emirate’s economy.

On Saturday 26 October, he met HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

HH Sheikh Mohammed praised Switzerland’s early support for Dubai to host the expo, which marked its one-year countdown on 20 October.

State news claim President Maurer plans to lead a high-level delegation to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony for the Swiss pavilion, although he did not provide a date for when it could take place.

OSS won a design competition to create the Swiss Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. Its design reference traditional Bedouin tents and uses temporary scaffolding elements and textiles.

Visitors will be able to experience the Swiss Alps with a theatre emerging from a sea of fog that references the snow-clad peaks.

Temporary exhibitions will highlight Swiss innovations and a rooftop restaurant will serve up some for the country’s most well-known foods.

Also known as Belle Vues, the pavilion will be located in the Opportunity District and could cost $15.2m, according to Commercial Interior Design’s sister title, Construction Week.
