Viewpoint Studio design Virgin Galactic’s space centre

London- and Singapore-based interior design practice Viewpoint Studio has completed Virgin Galactic’s commercial space centre in the stark, beautiful New Mexico desert.

It will be a hub for Virgin Galatic’s commercial space flights for tourists.

The designers used the harsh landscape as inspiration, drawing on the geography's rich colours and textures.

Dug into the landscape with a fully glazed wall facing the desert and runway, Gaia Lounge is the main zone of the space.

It features a kitchen, dining area and events space for staff, pilots and the family and friends of the passengers who will blast into space.

“Our brief was to integrate the astronaut experience alongside the requirements to be an operational work space for the staff, as well as to be a celebratory environment for the friends and family,” the practice said in a statement.

“The design is intended to express the excitement of the journey and specifically respond to its location, but at the same time to be a serene, comfortable and reassuring space.”

Everything at the Virgin Galactic centre has been designed to look out onto the runway through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Every item of furniture has been designed by Viewpoint Studio, from the large central barista island to the 12m-long banquette that runs across the space.

There’s a lightness to everything, with the space making use use of natural lighting. Soft material choices in natural hues of terracotta, green and rusted corten complement the area.

While slated elements in natural wood help to sound proof the large open space area.
