Italian architect Stefano Boeri is reportedly heading up an urban design project in Egypt that will see Africa’s first residential complex with a “vertical forest” built.

Early design work has already started and renders show three low-rise residential buildings covered in planted terraces. The architect has dubbed them the 'green cubes'.

The project will be located 30 miles east of Cairo and construction work is expected to begin in 2020, following the finishing of detailed design work. The project will be wrapped up by 2022, according to Commercial Interior Design’s sister title, Construction Week.

Stefano Boeri, who has established a reputation for urban architecture projects that incorporate vertical gardens, he will be joined on the development by Egyptian designer Shimaa Shalash and fellow Italian Laura Gatti, a landscape architect.

Shalash told US news organisation CNN that now was the time to ramp up the project, after working on plans to design and build a vertical forest in Egypt for five years.

“Egypt is witnessing a flourishing moment in terms of new planning and real estate development. This is the moment to be present. We couldn't think of a better start than introducing environmentally sustainable architecture solutions,” she reportedly said.
