Herman Miller’s German-designed Cosm chair has won Red Dot’s Best of the Best Product Design Award in the Office Chairs category.
The office chair was designed for Herman Miller by Berlin-based Studio 7.5 and hit the market in 2018.
Cosm chairs have since been sold to more than 1,700 companies in 90 countries and the product has become an award-winning success story in the office furniture space.
Cosm picked up the Red Dot award for its innovation, functionality, quality, ergonomics and durability, according to Herman Miller.
It is the first industry chair with a suspension armrest and features an automatic tilt, which Studio 7.5 said is the “culmination of two decades of design research and engineering”.
The tilt helps the chair adjust to whomever is sitting in it, providing ergonomic support that adapts to the user. This dynamic tilt makes Cosm useful as a shared chair, as well as a personal one.
Carola Zwick, co-founder of Studio 7.5, said the company wanted to create the sensation of “weightlessness” with Cosm, which was hard because it required “complex mechanics”.
“The fact that we succeeded in creating this seating experience in an aesthetically readable object that can now also be used beyond the classical office world confirms our recognition by the Red Dot - best of the Best. We are very pleased about that.”
