Well known architect, author and photographer Rifat Chadirji has died.

The 93-year-old passed away in London on Friday (April 11th). It being reported that he had contracted COVID-19.

Known as the father of modern Iraqi architecture, Chadirji is credited with designing nearly 100 of Iraq's most well-known structures, including the iconic 'Freedom Monument.'

Revered worldwide, his career was marked by many awards and honours.

In 1986, he was the recipient of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture Chairman’s Award and in 2008 he was named winner of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award.

Said to be a modernist at heart, he also used ancient Iraqi motifs in his building designs.

An accomplished photographer, Chadirji complied a 100,000-imagine archive documenting Iraqi life.

The Rifat Chadirji Prize was established in 2017, as part of the Tamayouz Excellence Award program of championing and celebrating the best of Iraqi architecture.
