Surge for Water: UAE’s interior designers unite to tackle water crisis
Unified under a concept of ‘Reimagine Lighting’, 11 UAE-based interior design houses will reveal their bespoke, sustainable creations in support of Surge for Water, a global non-profit organisation fighting for access to clean water across three continents and 11 countries.
Surge has challenged designers to create innovative, sustainable lighting fixtures in support of their cause and get a chance to showcase their creations at the gala, which will take place on 6 December at The Address – Dubai Marina.
Each designer has worked together with a local manufacturer to produce a lighting, using indigenous, reclaimed or recycled materials.
The participating designers include: CH-Interiors, Design by Mariska, Design Worldwide Partnership (DWP), Earth & Ware, Gensler, HOK, Maja Kozel Design, Pallavi Dean Interiors, Perkins + Will, Sneha Divias Atelier, and Wilson Associates.
The competition promotes sustainable design across the entire product lifecycle with an emphasis on waste reduction, which ultimately leads to less water withdrawn from the planet. The process encourages the designers to think about the water footprint, such as the water used in the manufacturing of their products, as well as the connection between water and energy.
“A well-lit future requires reimagining the way we think about light,” says Marita Peters, executive director at Surge. “In addition to raising awareness for our work, through their creations, the designers can inspire several thousands of people to live sustainably, thus creating a brighter world.”
This year’s judging panel includes Anke Boehning, director-design development at Roya International; Marina Petrovic, editor of Commercial Interior Design, Aidan Imanova, editor of designMENA.com, Scott Coombes, director at AESG and Kristin Lee, chair ID department at AUD.
