Jordan to build $1bn Star Trek attraction

Rubicon Group Holding (RGH), in conjunction with CBS Consumer Products and Paramount, will design and produce a Star Trek-themed centre at the Red Sea Astrarium (TRSA) entertainment resort in Aqaba, Jordan.

This marks the iconic property’s first themed entertainment venue outside the US. The 184-acre resort is expected to be completed by 2014.

The announcement was made by RGH CEO Randa S. Ayoubi at the Jordanian-American Business Forum, under the patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah II of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, in a special signing ceremony attended by business leaders from Jordan and the US.

The themed entertainment destination will serve as a model for green energy, incorporating state-of-the-art renewable technologies throughout the facility.

It will also host a ‘future’ pavilion where businesses, students and attendees can learn about alternative energy sources ranging from solar and wind energy to grey-water harvesting.

The project, described as a milestone in the development of tourism in Jordan, will provide a progressive and entertaining celebration of the region’s culture and heritage.

Architectural firm Callison has been engaged to work with RGH and its team of visionaries, including Paramount Recreation and CBS, to master-plan the resort. “TRSA will be a destination showcase in an extraordinary part of Jordan,” said Ayoubi.

“At its core, Star Trek is about bringing worlds together and about a profound hope for the future,” said Liz Kalodner, executive vice president and general manager of CBS Consumer Products.

“We are proud to bring such a unique, interactive Star Trek property to this part of the world to be a part of Jordan’s future.”

One of the biggest fans of the television and movie franchise, it would appear, is the King of Jordan himself, King Abdullah II, who appeared as an extra in an episode of Star Trek – Voyager (Episode 35) in 1995, prior to his ascension to the throne. Though his non-speaking appearance is brief, he looks a natural in front of the camera.

King Abdullah II has other action-oriented interests. He’s an avid sky-diver, scuba diver and rally driver.
