Ghana’s Italian job

Accra, Ghana, MCA

Italian design studio Mario Cucinella Architects (MCA) has unveiled its design of a 17,000m2 mixed use complex in the heart of the Ghanaian capital of Accra.

MCA’s design of One Airport Square features a public courtyard at the front of the building, which is orientated to reduce solar glare.

Nine floors of flexible office space are combined with 2,000m2 of retail facilities, while the external plaza has the potential to be transformed into additional shopping space at a later date.

A range of food and beverage venders will help to make the complex a vibrant social hub throughout the day and evening.

The design’s sustainable elements include natural daylighting, rainwater collection, natural ventilation through an internal courtyard, and overhanging fins which reduce solar gain on all facades.

The latticework effect on the project’s exterior draws inspiration from traditional African patterns.
